Well into the excecution, with Nico on the other side / I suddenly realized that one more would have to swim; Nico's little swim looked so refreshing that I shouted out that I wanted to go fourth...

July 7, 1995
This is the D-Day of the trip. The last hours on the ice was pure joy as I remember it. It was pleasently downhill, the landscape constabtly shifting, not many obstacles. We were all at home on the ice now -and the terrible weakling that started the climb three weeks earlier was long gone. Even if it tasted terrible in the beginning, our diet must have been nutritious. We kept speeding up and stretching the working hours, eight and exhausted the first few days. The last week we did 12 hours easy. I blame the good food and the the occacional opportunity to have a good laugh at one of the others expence. Everything panned out in the end and now iI can't remember much hardship. Still the somewhat strange arguments that for a few hours totally absorbed my mind - are still clear. Lucky for us, it was Nicolai and I that had the worst spouts. We had had a few drunken brawls before, from which we had both had concluded that we we deep down were incredible stupid.
